The January 1945 sequence begins with Operation Sampler, an attack cancelled after bad weather offered no prospect of improvement. Premier and Trumpeter then provided Avengers and Wildcats for anti-submarine cover, fighter protection, mine-laying, and attacks on radar and wireless stations during Operations Spellbinder and Gratis. Eleven mines were laid successfully, while spare parts moved between carriers to repair damaged Wildcats. The episode shows how carrier effectiveness depended on cooperation and maintenance as much as the number of aircraft launched. It also shows several modest air tasks supporting a surface action group and restricting coastal traffic. The lack of post-strike photographic reconnaissance and incomplete German records warn against treating wartime damage estimates as certain.
