Erzherzog Karl class and the value of rapid medium guns

A look at why the Erzherzog Karl class favoured practical gun batteries and volume of fire over long-range status weapons.

Notes

The Erzherzog Karl class continued the local-mission approach with Skoda weapons selected for the likely fight rather than the largest possible calibre. The Adriatic's confined geography made rapid fire from the 9.4-inch and 7.5-inch batteries more useful than an abstract pursuit of extreme range. Before mature long-range fire control, the largest guns offered status as well as combat power, while quick-firing medium weapons were expected to do much of the destructive work. The 7.5-inch guns could reach farther than the 9.4-inch weapons and sustain roughly three rounds per minute, making their practical contribution unusually important. The bombardment of Ancona gives a concrete example, with both calibres used against railway, gun, and port targets.
