Erebus and Terror used 15-inch guns to provide naval fire support in both world wars from hulls drawing about 3.56 metres. They took part in the Ostend and Zeebrugge raids. Erebus survived an attack by a remote-controlled explosive boat, while motor torpedo boats torpedoed Terror. In the Second World War, Erebus served with Task Force O off Omaha Beach, and Terror was sunk at Benghazi in 1941. The fictional HMS Seraphim is offered as a comparison, imagining a third ship of the class. Interwar refits preserved the class's usefulness and gave the rebuilt ships a close resemblance to the later Roberts class, which can be read as an updated version of the same basic design.
