Operation Infatuate formed part of the Battle of the Scheldt and sought to open Antwerp to Allied shipping, easing the logistical pressure on the advance into northern Europe. The 4th Special Service Brigade and 52nd Lowland Division made two seaborne landings while the 2nd Canadian Infantry Division attacked across the Walcheren causeway against a substantial German garrison. Erebus served in the support squadron alongside Warspite, Roberts, landing craft guns, and rocket craft. Reported losses were about 1,500 Allied casualties, while German forces suffered roughly 1,200 killed or wounded and 2,900 captured. A post-operation commendation credited the naval support craft with silencing coastal defences and limiting the assault brigade's casualties, while also acknowledging the cost paid by the supporting sailors.
