Chapter · 28:19-31:12

Air-defense refits grew around an unchanged main battery

Wartime refits added pom-poms and Oerlikons while Enterprise kept all seven 6-inch guns and sixteen torpedo tubes.

Notes

Enterprise's light anti-aircraft battery expanded from quadruple machine-gun mounts and single pom-poms to two quadruple pom-poms and numerous powered and single 20 mm weapons. By 1944 this gave her a substantial close-range defense for an elderly light cruiser. Yet the ship never surrendered her seven 6-inch guns or sixteen torpedo tubes, preserving offensive power while the air threat grew. The existing 4-inch positions appear over-engineered enough for twin mounts, making their non-adoption a striking missed upgrade.
