Enterprise's wartime legacy and Magic Carpet

Enterprise's greatest wartime value was her repeated availability during the 1942 carrier crisis, followed by later night-fighter and repatriation service.

Notes

Enterprise was most important in 1942, when she moved between major operations and at times represented the only available American fleet-carrier striking force. She survived repeated damage and remained present when the loss of another carrier could have ended effective US carrier operations in the theater. As the fleet expanded, Enterprise shifted from premier strike-carrier work toward night-fighter duties and other roles. She finished the war bringing servicemen home under Operation Magic Carpet. Her reputation rests as much on repeated availability during scarcity as on any single battle.
