Chapter · 1:04:01-1:06:23

A nuclear task group trades logistics for global mobility

Grouping Enterprise with seven nuclear cruisers creates a highly mobile strike force whose route could force an opponent to retask limited satellite coverage.

Notes

In this late-1980s counterfactual, Enterprise operates with two Virginia-class cruisers, two California-class cruisers, Truxtun, Long Beach, and Bainbridge. The group would still need aviation fuel and food, but surface propulsion would no longer force routine refueling. That endurance could support an indirect route around South America and complicate attempts to predict the force's approach. Surveillance satellites cover limited areas on repeated orbits, so an unexpected route could force an opponent to retask sensors or launch new coverage and accept gaps elsewhere.
