The Enterprise name and procurement politics

CVN-65 and CVN-80 carried the Enterprise name forward, while the Ford-class naming sequence is read as protection against cancellation.

Notes

The first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier became USS Enterprise, CVN-65, and inherited the Big E nickname. The planned CVN-80 continued the name within the Gerald R. Ford class. At the time of recording, CVN-80 had been laid down in April 2022 and was scheduled for launch in November 2025 and commissioning in 2028. The choice of John F. Kennedy, Enterprise, and Doris Miller for successive ships is presented as political insurance for an expensive program. Each name carries enough public and institutional weight to make cancellation harder. In this interpretation, naval commemoration also serves the practical politics of sustaining a procurement program.
