The Echo-class HMS Enterprise described here was a 163-ton inshore survey vessel with a crew of eighteen. Her routine work concentrated on sandbanks, coastlines, and harbours along eastern England and the eastern English Channel. Visits to Belgian, Dutch, German, and other nearby ports added a modest flag-showing role to that technical mission. The example shows how even a very small hydrographic vessel could combine navigational safety work with persistent local naval presence.
