A cruiser visit left East Africa a lasting rugby cup

Sailors from Enterprise donated a trophy whose regional rugby competition outlasted the ship by generations.

Notes

During the cruiser's 1928 East African tour, her sailors donated the original Enterprise Cup. The regional rugby competition was instituted in 1929 and began play in 1930 among Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, with other participants joining later. Apart from wartime and a few calendar-related suspensions, it continued for generations. Its survival shows how peacetime cruiser visits could create cultural and diplomatic legacies far beyond the ship's service life.
