The fictional ship's range, size, maneuverability, diplomatic symbolism, and deep-space mission all fit the cruiser analogy. Assigning a thirty-three-year-old first-time captain to a major vessel expected to operate independently is much harder to accept. A contrasting fictional battlecruiser commander is in his early fifties and reaches his fourth command after two destroyers and executive-officer service. Wartime promotion can accelerate that career path. Under ordinary conditions, however, distant diplomatic and first-contact responsibilities call for a proven safe pair of hands.
