The Entente did not amount to a war guarantee. Its three agreements settled disputes over Egypt and Morocco, Newfoundland and West Africa, and Siam, Madagascar, and the New Hebrides without promising automatic military support. Britain and France also wanted to reduce the chance that their Japanese and Russian relationships would drag them into war with each other. A contemporary British description called the Entente a shared frame of mind whose practical content could remain vague. The alignment was real, while Royal Navy action still depended on a political choice.

A treaty-law detour shows how Egypt, Morocco, Siam, and colonial bargains mattered more than a clear promise to fight Germany.
