Chapter ยท 42:13-43:07

How victory at Kentish Knock bred strategic overconfidence

England treated a limited victory as decisive, dispersed ships toward the Mediterranean, and gave the restored Tromp room to reverse the naval balance.

Notes

English leaders read too much into a victory that had cost the Dutch only two ships. They detached a force for the Mediterranean, leaving too little strength both in northern waters and at the Battle of Leghorn. The Dutch quickly restored Tromp and won at Dungeness and Leghorn, reversing the confidence Kentish Knock had produced. Treating the victory as decisive spread the English fleet too thin and reversed campaign momentum.
