Chapter ยท 18:41-21:30

Local radar processing reduces a task group's emissions

Processing radar data aboard the transmitting ship limits the continuous communications that could reveal a task group's location.

Notes

A task group may have good reasons to use a surface ship's radar as well as airborne early warning. The ship operating that radar needs enough computing power to process what it receives. Sending all the data elsewhere would require ships to communicate continuously across the formation's operational spacing. That traffic creates detectable emissions and can reveal the group's position. Laser links also have to work across the real distances between ships at sea.
