Electronic warfare, CAP packages, and air-group depth

A two-seat electronic-warfare J-15 can accompany fighters from the third launch position, while larger air groups expand the missions a Chinese carrier can sustain.

Notes

One suggested use of the third launch position is a two-seat J-15D alongside two fighters, creating an electronically supported combat-air-patrol or strike package. Maintaining a useful standing CAP is estimated to require roughly eighteen fighters. Liaoning's twenty-four aircraft can support that basic defensive task, while Shandong's thirty-six provide room for a stronger patrol or simultaneous strike capacity. Air-group size therefore gives the carrier greater tactical flexibility.
