Electromagnetic guns can deepen magazines

Removing conventional propellant can shrink gun-system volume and let designers carry more projectiles, reinforcing the case for deep magazines.

Notes

A railgun projectile does not need a conventional propellant charge, removing a large portion of the volume associated with each round. The smaller ammunition package can reduce breech and turret footprints and give designers more freedom in arranging the weapon. The released space should enlarge the magazine rather than justify carrying fewer rounds, because combat history repeatedly punishes shallow ammunition allowances. This shipboard calculation differs from the physical limits faced by an individual carrying ammunition on foot. Dense central nuclear generation can preserve still more hull volume for stores, linking electrical power and magazine endurance in the overall design.
