How the Elbing class fit German torpedo doctrine

The Elbings are best understood as ocean-going torpedo ships shaped for Baltic numbers and firepower rather than as conventional destroyers.

Notes

M. J. Whitley's Destroyers of World War Two gives the class little space in a standard reference. The Elbings fit a German lineage of ocean-going torpedo craft: larger than small coastal boats, but still centred on torpedo attack rather than the Royal Navy's destroyer model. That balance made sense in the confined Baltic, where numbers and offensive firepower mattered more than large hulls.
