Edward I recruited veterans from both sides

Experience gained on either side of Henry III's baronial wars helped supply Edward I with troops for his Welsh campaigns.

Notes

Edward I's fighting force is portrayed as one of the most experienced in contemporary Europe. Many of its men had learned their trade in the conflicts between Henry III and his baronial opponents. Their experience included service on either side of those wars. Edward was willing to accept former opponents among the rank and file if they would fight for him, while taking a different approach to their leaders. That recruitment policy helps explain the military experience Gwynedd faced during its resistance.
