Economic warfare behind the western campaigns

The Anaconda Plan and the Tennessee-Cumberland-Mississippi operations show how blockade and inland campaigns formed one economic strategy.

Notes

Winfield Scott's Anaconda Plan and the naval blockade formed part of the Union effort to break Confederate economic capacity. Shiloh belonged to the February-to-June 1862 Tennessee, Cumberland, and Mississippi rivers campaign, itself part of a continuing sequence of western operations. Those campaigns fed into fighting in Kentucky, Tennessee, northern Mississippi, and eventually Vicksburg. The war's strategic outcome depended on access, supply, and economic depth as much as battlefield initiative.
