East Indies resources underwrote Dutch national survival

Oil, rubber, territory, and purchasing power made the Dutch East Indies both the exile government's material contribution and its foundation for continued independence.

Notes

The East Indies were more than a distant colony to the Free Dutch government. They formed its remaining territorial base after the occupation of the Netherlands and therefore sustained its claim to act as an independent state. Oil, rubber, and other supplies could support the wider Allied war effort while generating the currency needed to buy equipment. That combination made defense of the region an existential national priority rather than a peripheral imperial commitment.
