Fleet formation and missile defence during Earth's counterattack

A fictional fleet action shows why transport protection, firing arcs, missile reserves, and shield power matter even when one side has superior weapons.

Notes

The allied ships approach in a diamond formation, with Fury and the smaller Vengeance stacked in the centre. The opposing fleet tries to protect its troop transports by moving them inside its formation, but the ships are still rearranging when the attack begins. Some hulls block other ships' weapons fire. Two successive launches send 140 fusion missiles towards the defenders, while a reserve is retained for later use. Difficult sensor tracking and the shrinking engagement range complicate interception. Superior allied shields withstand the return fire, with improved fusion reactors allowing Vengeance to remain in the fight.
