Early peace preserves the prewar alliance system

An earlier end to the war leaves Britain stronger, weakens the case for new multilateral institutions, and changes the settlement of Russia and Germany.

Notes

Without the historical length and cost of the First World War, no comparable League of Nations or early naval-treaty system is likely to emerge. Britain would retain more financial and naval freedom, making the Anglo-Japanese alliance particularly important within a continuing prewar style of diplomacy. Japan would also see its principal ally win decisively through sea power, which raises the alliance's prestige. Russia's presence in the peace negotiations affects whether Poland becomes independent or remains Russian territory. Britain would still have a reason to preserve Germany as a buffer against Russia.
