An early destroyer needed to be at least as fast as the torpedo boats it opposed and faster than the ships it protected. Speed allowed it to move between an approaching threat and the fleet, while manoeuvrability helped it get through smoke to bring guns or torpedoes to bear. Small destroyers also needed room to stay clear of the heavy shells crossing between capital ships until an interception or attack required them to close. As the type grew more capable, its guns could threaten smaller craft and its torpedoes could deter larger ships. This screen gave the protected fleet more choice over when to engage.

Speed and manoeuvrability let destroyers screen the fleet
Destroyer speed supports interception and attack, while a screen armed with guns and torpedoes gives the fleet more control over when it fights.
