Jellicoe began in the ironclad fleet but gained his first combat experience ashore during the Egyptian War of 1882. At only twenty-three, he led a naval rifle company after a career spent mainly learning and operating heavy guns aboard ship. The naval brigade also illustrates how nineteenth-century navies supplied artillery, logistics, and manpower for campaigns on land. Jellicoe adapted successfully to that unfamiliar responsibility and became known as an officer who could solve problems. Such usefulness drew the attention and patronage of senior officers, accelerating his path toward promotion.
