Earl of Peterborough and Sir Thomas Picton in the eastern Mediterranean

Two Lord Clive-class monitors armed with guns from HMS Mars operated across the eastern Mediterranean and shelled Ottoman positions in several campaigns.

Notes

Earl of Peterborough was named for Charles Mordaunt, third Earl of Peterborough, who fought in Spain during the War of the Spanish Succession. Sir Thomas Picton commemorated the British general, described as one of Wellington's favorites, who was killed at the Battle of Waterloo. Both monitors received 12-inch guns from HMS Mars and served in the eastern Mediterranean instead of joining their six sisters with the Dover Patrol. Earl of Peterborough supported operations around the Dardanelles and against Ottoman forces in Egypt, Palestine, and Turkey. Sir Thomas Picton followed a similar career and supplied heavy firepower where the army needed it. Their deployment divided one monitor class between concentrated Channel bombardment and distributed expeditionary support.
