The Royal Navy answered the E-boat threat with numerous gun-armed craft. Steam Gun Boats and Fairmile D craft were examples, and destroyers also appear among the response options. These gunboats differed from the older Insect class, whose vessels nevertheless had some success against E-boats in one or two encounters.
