Duty, honor, and judgment under brittle orders

A senior fictional officer's response to a captain's difficult choice turns the Elvar command problem into a question of duty, honor, and professional judgment.

Notes

The Elvar command culture is internally coherent, although its rigidity makes the officers' choices frustrating to a naval historian. Glynn Stewart points to Kat's father, a senior naval officer, as evidence that some Elvar recognize the problem. His judgment is that a captain's worth becomes clear when duty and honor conflict. The scene asks how professional judgment should work when obedience and personal honor lead in different directions.
