Dutch treaty leverage before the Glorious Revolution

Concessions for German cargoes and neutral shipping illustrate Dutch bargaining power before William of Orange linked the two states.

Notes

After the Second Anglo-Dutch War, Dutch carriers gained the right to bring German commodities formerly handled by the Hanseatic League into England as though they were Dutch goods. England also accepted the principle that free ships made free goods for neutral shipping. This was intended to protect Dutch carriage when the Dutch remained neutral during another war. Roughly equal power gave the Dutch room to secure these concessions. The relationship changed after the Glorious Revolution, when William of Orange became king of England while remaining the Dutch stadtholder.
