Dutch enlisted and NCO titles often describe practical work aboard a vessel. Skipper, boatswain, quartermaster, and sailor preserve responsibilities recognizable across naval and merchant service. Warships and trading vessels could be the same ships adapted to different uses, and the people leading them already knew how to sail. Early Royal Navy commissioned gentlemen depended on warranted sailing masters for seamanship. Gunners, surgeons, carpenters, and other specialists also held warrants, with their mates supporting the work that kept the ship functioning.
