The modern Dutch navy omits a full admiral grade in ordinary use but retains several flag grades above captain. Schout-bij-nacht, now equivalent to rear admiral, originally described the officer responsible for the fleet during the night watch. Captain and lieutenant grades preserve practical seagoing language. NATO codes then distinguish junior officers still under close supervision from those trusted to stand more independently.
