Dutch NATO grades expose the shape of an officer career

The Dutch hierarchy shows ship command near the midpoint between junior training and senior strategic leadership.

Notes

The Dutch and Royal Navy comparisons show roughly five officer categories at captain and below, with another five levels of senior command above them. Ship command may feel like the pinnacle of a naval career even though captain sits near the middle of that formal ladder. An officer can spend about two-thirds of a career developing as a junior officer and becoming a capable ship captain. The remaining third then compresses the transition toward strategic responsibility over larger forces. That uneven distribution of time raises a training problem: preparation for senior command must fit into a much shorter portion of the career.
