Although rooted in a prewar design, K III remained modern enough to serve fourteen years in the Far East. The boat functioned as a mobile minefield with torpedoes, useful surface and submerged speed, and a design philosophy centered on range and reliability. Her external traversing torpedo tubes strengthened that mobile-threat concept without requiring a large hull. Her cramped accommodation shows the human cost of fitting 29 crew into a small submarine with fewer permanent bunks.
