Dutch commitments elsewhere would not necessarily prevent colonial authorities in the East Indies from pursuing an opportunity in the Philippines. In this interpretation, the colonial administration retained the VOC's strong interest in profit after nationalisation and closer integration with the Dutch government. An independent Philippines could therefore attract interest as another source of revenue. A neighbouring example of independence could also worry authorities trying to preserve their position in Indonesia. These are proposed incentives within the counterfactual, rather than an account of a Dutch takeover that occurred.
