Chapter · 9:14-10:57

Conquest trapped Dutch and Polish naval forces

Dutch and free Polish sailors could keep fighting, but conquest removed the national bases needed to replace ships, train crews, and alter force structure.

Notes

The Dutch possessed capable technology, captains, crews, and ships, yet too few of them to meet the crisis in the East Indies. By January 1942, the Netherlands had already lost its European base and was losing the colonial territory on which further resistance depended. Dutch ships could support land forces and the wider alliance, while the free Polish navy likewise continued fighting with what had escaped. Neither government-in-exile retained the population, yards, or independent industrial base needed to replace losses and redesign its naval force during the war.
