Helgoland used manoeuvre and darkness to escape the Allied pursuit

Helgoland's force regrouped, turned south at dusk and passed across the Allied formation's front in darkness to escape.

Notes

After Triglav sank, Helgoland's surviving force turned southwest. Helgoland traded fire with Dartmouth and Quarto and launched a stern torpedo when Quarto came uncomfortably close. The arrival of Weymouth, Nino Bixio and further Italian destroyers increased the pressure as the Austro-Hungarian ships continued trying to escape. The delayed destroyer regained speed and rejoined the formation at 16:30. With dusk approaching, Captain Seitz turned south at full speed and then looped around the Allied force in darkness. At about 18:15 the Austro-Hungarian ships passed across the enemy's front, with an estimated separation of 3.5 kilometres. The manoeuvre let the force break contact and withdraw.
