Chapter · 25:36-27:30

The Durazzo raid began with the submarine Monge and a fog-bound harbour entry

Before mines transformed the mission, Helgoland and five Tatras sank the French submarine Monge and used dense fog to penetrate Durazzo harbour.

Notes

Lika and Triglav were the Tatra class's only First World War losses, both during the Durazzo operation. The December 1915 raid sent the cruiser Helgoland and five Tatras south toward the harbour. En route, Helgoland rammed the French submarine Monge and Balaton finished it with gunfire. The destroyers rescued the surviving submariners, although the French commander chose to remain aboard and died with his boat. Dense fog covered the destroyers' entry into Durazzo harbour while Helgoland engaged the coastal batteries. The destroyers crossed a minefield on the way in and found no enemy destroyers. They sank a steamer and a sailing vessel before beginning their withdrawal.
