The 55-ship Allied attack on Durazzo brought Italian, British, Australian, and American forces together for a concentrated bombardment. Damage was extensive enough that an Allied army occupied the city about a week later with little resistance, although it remains unclear whether resistance vanished completely. The subsequent loss of Viribus Unitis added a final small-craft innovation to the campaign. Italian attackers used an early human-torpedo method without knowing that the dreadnought had just been transferred to the new State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs.
