At 4,500 tons standard displacement and a little over 5,560 tons fully loaded, the 147.7-metre class packed several weapon systems into a relatively small hull. Combined diesel or gas propulsion used diesel engines for cruising and gas turbines for maximum power, with separate diesel generators supplying electrical power. It could reach 32 knots and cruise 7,000 nautical miles at 18 knots, while a dense radar and sensor fit supported air and anti-submarine duties. Two helicopters, two triple 324 mm torpedo launchers, Otomat anti-ship missiles, and MILAS anti-submarine missiles gave it reach across surface and undersea warfare. Air defence paired Aspide and Standard missiles with three OTO Melara 76 mm Super Rapido mounts. The forward Albatros/Aspide launcher sat between the two forward 76 mm mounts, behind the OTO Melara 127 mm gun. That larger gun added surface and land-attack firepower.
