Durability and availability make capability real

A damaged aircraft's return and roughly 90 percent squadron availability show the reliability needed to turn helicopter theory into daily operations.

Notes

One H-19 returned after losing 18 inches of a main rotor blade to a tree. Across its fifteen-aircraft squadron, HMR-161 maintained about 90 percent availability. That normally left thirteen or fourteen helicopters ready, a level previous rotary-wing types had not delivered. The H-19's lift figures mattered because its reliability made that capacity available for daily operations.
