HMS Dunedin was hunting the German raider Atlantis and supply ship Python with two escorts when U-124 anticipated the group's maneuvers. Two torpedoes reached beyond their theoretical maximum range and hit a vital area, sinking the older D-class light cruiser in seventeen minutes. Only sixty-seven men survived from a crew of roughly 486. The loss removed a useful surface-raider hunter, while U-124 itself was later destroyed by HMS Stonecrop and HMS Black Swan.
