A cruiser armed to disrupt the screen

The class combined 9.2-inch guns, ten 6-inch casemate guns, quick-firing weapons, and torpedoes to fight through the layered threats around a battle fleet.

Notes

The armament answered the escalating contest among torpedo boats, destroyers, and light cruisers. The heavy guns offered reach against armoured cruisers, while the 6-inch and quick-firing weapons addressed smaller opponents. The ship also carried submerged torpedo tubes and steam pinnaces with torpedoes, a reminder that distributed offensive weapons were not a modern invention. The resulting battery was intended to break an enemy screen so Royal Navy destroyers could reach their own torpedo targets.
