Luigi Amedeo, Duke of Abruzzi, was a grandson of Victor Emmanuel II and commanded the Italian fleet from 1914 to 1917. British and French pressure contributed to his replacement by Paolo Thaon di Revel. Mussolini later used him for diplomatic missions, including the 1928 Italo-Ethiopian treaty, for which he brought a Fiat 3000 tank to Addis Ababa as a gift. In 1932 he presided over the newly merged Italian Line but resigned after the liner Rex broke down, saying he could not reconcile executives from the former rival companies. His career shows how royal connections and political status carried influence across naval, diplomatic, and commercial institutions even when professional performance was questioned.
