The duc d'Enghien execution and Napoleon's rule

The seizure, military trial, and execution of the duc d'Enghien tests Napoleon's reputation for legality against an episode that helped mobilize the Third Coalition.

Notes

The killing of the duc d'Enghien was one reason European powers moved toward the War of the Third Coalition. Napoleon's cavalry crossed into another state, seized the young Bourbon prince, and brought him to France. A military court offered little meaningful defense and convicted him without evidence adequate even by contemporary standards before he was shot. The episode challenges praise of Napoleon's rule of law and toleration by asking whether his government observed those principles when it perceived a dynastic threat. The lesson is historiographic as well as political: declared ideals must be tested against how a regime treats vulnerable opponents.
