Drone target identification and human fallibility

Groupthink, sensor perspective, intelligence cues, and time pressure can still produce a mistaken strike decision.

Notes

Adding more people to a decision room does not eliminate error because a large group can defer to a dominant voice or avoid confrontation. A familiar object seen from only one angle illustrates the target-identification problem: limited perspective can make it ambiguous. Drone crews also depend on sensor quality, distance, prior intelligence, and what they expect to find in a particular area. Gunfire or another uncertain cue can make the apparent target seem to confirm the briefing. Under time pressure, a team may strike because it believes an attack is imminent even though the safer choice would be to gather more information. War remains a human activity, and operators remain fallible inside elaborate command systems.
