Nevada marked the arrival of the American standard battleship. Its ten 14-inch guns matched Iron Duke's gun count at a larger calibre, and the United States Navy's move to triple turrets increased the technological pressure on British designers. Nevada's turbines and Oklahoma's triple-expansion engines also provided a direct machinery comparison within the same class. Both ships had nominal speeds of 20.5 knots and ranges of 8,000 nautical miles at 10 knots, although those figures did not promise identical sustained performance. A thick armour belt helped make the class one of the stronger battleship designs of the period.
