Borodino's fast battleship role

Russia's Borodino class paired twelve 14-inch guns with fast-battleship speed for the demanding routes from the Black and Baltic seas.

Notes

Borodino sits on the fast-battleship spectrum, a choice suited to Russia's constrained access from the Black Sea and Baltic. A Russian force might have to fight through an opponent before reaching wider operating waters, making speed and heavy firepower useful together. Four triple turrets on one level produced a twelve-gun 14-inch broadside while retaining a claimed speed of 26.5 knots. That battery greatly outweighed Derfflinger's eight 12-inch guns, and Russian gunnery had become effective by the First World War. The comparison shows how strategic geography and an expected fighting role could produce a very different capital-ship design.
