Andrea Doria and a navy built for its waters

Italy's Andrea Doria class kept 12-inch guns and 21-knot speed because its design matched Mediterranean priorities rather than a direct North Sea contest.

Notes

The Andrea Doria class was a coherent response to the opponents and waters Italy expected to face. Thirteen 12-inch guns provided ample weight of fire for that mission even as other navies moved to larger calibres. A speed of about 21 knots and useful protection completed a conventional, purposeful Mediterranean battleship. Italy did not need to copy every North Sea escalation when its likely enemies and operating area posed a different design problem. That clear fit between mission and design contrasts with the episode's uncertainty about what strategic task German capital ships were built to accomplish.
