Four proposed SSGNs would share the Dreadnought class design and use missile-tube inserts for conventional weapons. The suggested inserts contain seven or three tubes according to the choice between Tomahawk-type cruise missiles and hypersonic weapons. Together with the strategic deterrent boats, they would form an eight-submarine force covering nuclear and conventional deterrence. A parallel proposal adds three LHDs to the two strike carriers, producing five flight decks able to operate F-35Bs and Merlins. The intended availability benefit is to keep at least two decks ready for operations at any one time.
