Dreadnought, Satsuma, and South Carolina in chronological context

Dates and armament layouts correct the claim that Satsuma and South Carolina straightforwardly preceded HMS Dreadnought.

Question

Were Satsuma and South Carolina laid down before HMS Dreadnought?

Short answer

Satsuma was laid down earlier, but carried a mixed main battery. The South Carolina class was laid down in December 1906, after Dreadnought's October 1905 start.

Notes

The laying-down dates given are May 1905 for Satsuma, October 1905 for Dreadnought, March 1906 for Aki, and December 1906 for the South Carolina class. Satsuma preceded Dreadnought at that stage, but her armament combined four 12-inch guns in two twin turrets with twelve 10-inch guns in six twin turrets. That was a mixed main battery. Dreadnought launched on 10 February 1906, followed by Satsuma on 15 November 1906 and Aki on 15 April 1907. Michigan launched on 26 May 1908, ahead of South Carolina on 11 July 1908. The comparison separates the American superfiring arrangement from claims about which ships were actually laid down or launched first.
