Chapter · 31:37-34:36

HMS Dreadnought marked Suckling as a safe commander

Suckling's Jamaica posting placed a trusted junior captain and a powerful 60-gun ship where they could contain any expansion of the Seven Years' War.

Notes

Suckling took HMS Dreadnought, flagship of his relative Rear Admiral George Townshend, to the Jamaica Station. The assignment was more than a quiet backwater because Dreadnought supplied a dependable core around which weaker local officers could rally if the war spread. The contrast between officers sent somewhere safe and the trusted captains positioned to lead them explains why ship type and mission matter when interpreting a posting. Patrols around Port Royal and Saint-Domingue made the ship a strategic reserve in a region not yet at the center of combat.
